Conker players wil be familiar with this - at least those who soaked their prime specimens in vinegar overnight to harden them up.
The process used is not quite so crude, it relies on high pressures and temerature to inject chemicals into the wood to affect the transformation. What comes out the other end is a cheap softwood that can be easily cultivated and which has all the attribites of a hardwood. One of the prime qualities is the stabililty of thw wood which means it doesn't shrink or expand.'
